Silverton is a bit hard to describe. It's a bit like a ghost town with tourist attractions. It was established as a mining town in 1885 but repeated requests by the town council to the NSW government to extend the railway west of Broken Hill were denied, and as Broken Hill's mines grew, Silverton declined as a town.
It's remaining commercial buildings, gaol, and a couple of churches are diligently maintained by the council and today Silverton is one of the region's main tourist attractions. The original Mad Max movie was filmed here (around 1978 if I remember correctly) and there's a Mad Max museum in the town, among assorted art galleries, museums, old buildings, a bakery and a pub (don't be tempted to have lunch there if you go). We discovered that there's a Mad Max sequel (maybe no. 5 or 6?) being filmed in the desert around Silverton now, featuring Chris Hemsworth apparently. We didn't see Chris while we were there but we did see half the population of our caravan park.
I'll let the photos do the talking. It's a strange place.
I love the kelpie on the corrugated iron. That's something that always sums up the farming outback to me!
I love seeing your pics, Barb. Did you manage to catch up with the BH uke people? Ask at the music shop. Caught up with any other uke groups?
