The historic, and very quaint, village of Wentworth (Barkindji Country) is just across the border on the NSW side of the Murray. We went there today and after a fairly decent feed at the Captain Sturt Hotel, had a fairly decent stroll around town, culminating in the main attraction: the confluence of the Darling and Murray Rivers.
The Murray-Darling River system is the fourth largest water catchment in the world and it's quite an impressive sight to see the two greatest rivers in the country come together (conflue?). The Darling is reddish brown because of its clay-based bed; while the Murray is grey/blue because of its sandy base. The two distinct colours are clear from the top of the viewing tower.
I wasn't keen on the Labs escorting me up and down the spiral staircase that led to the viewing platform, so they were tethered at the bottom. Much to their annoyance. Stanley desperately wanted to add the Darling to his list of "Top 10 rivers I have swum in", but that'll have to wait for another day.
We took in a few other attractions on our stroll through Wentworth. The scary corrugated iron nun took me back to my early primary school days.
Captured the confluence well there. Doesn’t it make you humble to think how long these features have been around and how many generations have lived and fished there and called it home? I’m always over-awed to view these rivers and early settlements and think about the history. More great pics. I’m so inspired by your photos, in fact, that I’m off to do the smart phone photography course at CIT in June.
