Sadly our time in Yaruwu country, Broome, has come to an end. We ran out of accommodation options and excuses to stay so today we reluctantly packed up and started the long journey back to the east coast.
During our stay we were lucky enough to see the "Staircase to the Moon" which is a natural phenomenon that occurs a few times a year. When the full moon rises in the east, and the tidal flats of Roebuck Bay have fully receded, the moonlight reflects on the wet sand creating an effect that looks like stairs leading to the moon. This happens three days in a row at full moon, a few times a year between April and October. We were able to see it from our final campsite near Town Beach. We weren't in the best location to see the staircase effect, but the sight of the orange moon rising over the horizon was beautiful.
Getting to Broome was an effort, and we faced many challenges along the way. There were several times when we contemplated just turning around and heading home. Our expectations of Broome were very high and we wondered if we'd be underwhelmed when we finally got there. But we needn't have worried. All three of us loved every little thing about it. The Labs particularly enjoyed running and swimming on Cable Beach and at Gantheaume Point, less so the subsequent visits to the Broome Veterinary Hospital those excursions caused.
Broome is one place we'll definitely return to. But we had to leave sometime and there's a lot more to see and do along the WA coast. So we'll take things more slowly on the return trip. No doubt there be more adventures to be had.
Here's a selection of photos from our time in Broome.
Another great blog Barb. The old saying: ‘You should always leave wanting more’. Doesn’t make the leaving any easier. As always - safe travels. H C.
I so want to give Juddy a big hug; and you too Stanley and you three Barb. Loving following your adventure.
Looks great, beautiful photos. Hope Juddy is improving.
Gorgeous photos and I love the Staircase to the Moon. We’ll be lying out in our back field later this week hoping to see some shooting stars. Always good to find places you’d like to go back to, rather than places you’re glad to leave. Keep ‘em coming, Barb - I’m loving the travelogue too.
Another fantastic set of photos to go with another terrific yarn. We’re all gonna be sad when this odyssey is over.
