Broome (part 1) - Dinosaurs

We've been in Broome a week now, on the traditional lands of the Yawuru people. We're now onto our third campsite - everything being so heavily booked that campers like us have to take a few days here and there wherever we can get them.

The Labs had a little staycation at the local vet/boarding kennel for a couple of days, giving me a bit of time to do some touristy things, including a lovely cruise across Roebuck Bay to see dinosaur footprints.

Around 130 million years ago Broome and the Kimberley coast was home to 22 different dinosaur species. We're talking pre-historic dinosaurs, not the still-using-a-landline kind. They roamed the coastal marshes and swamp forests, leaving tracks in the sandy tidal flats and river channels, leaving footprints that over time have become fossils and a happy playground for paleontologists from all over the world. If they hadn't been pointed out to me I might have thought they were just interesting rock pools, but it's fascinating to see something that old and so well preserved.

Broome's coastal tides reach a whopping 10.4 metres. We heard tales of tourists losing their 4WD vehicles while attempting to find a good fishing spot on the beach. At Town Beach, near where we were camped swimmers would have to walk a kilometre across the mud flats to reach the water at low tide.

But no such shenanigans for us. Our tour guides knew what they were doing and timed our trip accordingly. It was a great way to see this part of Broome, unencumbered by Labradors - although I did miss them more than they missed me, I think.

The following day I did what every visitor to Broome must do: ride a camel along Cable Beach. That was fun too, albeit a bit uncomfortable.

Here are some photos of our adventures so far, including a rare selfie wearing my kiddies' hat. I might have mentioned previously that I come from a long line of pin-heads.

So pleased you got to see the dinosaur footprints. We were fascinated by them in Winton Qld. We’ll have to get back to Broome one day for a look. H & J
