I love the smell of espresso in the morning. While I can live without a lot of luxuries on the road, coffee's not one of them. Having travelled a little bit, I know that a good coffee can sometimes be hard to find, especially in country towns and off the beaten track. And before anyone starts on a city versus country rant, it's not about that at all. It's just that in the big smoke there are more coffee shops to choose from, and more people to hire and train as baristas than there are in country areas. I've had some terrible coffee in the city and some great coffee in country towns. It's just that good ones can be harder to find when there's only one shop in town with an espresso machine.
No self-confessed coffee snob wants to start the day with undrinkable coffee. So what's the solution? Instant is not an option. Not ever. Nuh-uh.
Tea then? Well, I do like a good cuppa and drink a fair bit of the stuff. But tea doesn't start the heart like a good hit of espresso. After a bit of weighing up the pros and cons, the Labs and I agree that a pod machine is the answer. I've warned them we might have to sacrifice a few squeaky toys to compensate for the extra weight, but they're down with that. "But what about all those un-recyclable single-use pods?" I hear you ask. Tricky.
Good old Google delivered up what we think is a pretty good solution. Yet another enterprising Australian small business doing the right thing by the environment ... Urban Brew Coffee Pods are 100% biodegradable and use ethically sourced coffee. The pods are cheaper than the big brands, compatible with Nespresso and other pod machines and, most importantly, deliver a pretty decent hit of coffee. Problem solved. I've ordered a good supply to get me started on my trip (if they last before I hit the road), all I have to do is work out how to get more delivered to us while we're travelling. All suggestions welcome.
