We've been trying to avoid the big cities on this trip but they tend to get in the way and they're hard to get around. So our strategy has been to stay somewhere on the fringes and then when it's time to move we grit our teeth, hit the motorways and get to the other side as quickly as we can.
So we'd always intended to spend a few days on Kaurna country, Christies Beach in Adelaide's far south, before pointing ourselves in a westerly direction on our quest to reach Broome. But a long list of things going pear-shaped meant our stay in Adelaide has been much longer than planned.
Our good friends Georgina and Kevin recommended Christies Beach to us and we're very glad they did. Despite strong winds and rain almost every day, we can't imagine a nicer place to be "stuck" while we wait for things to be sorted. With a dog-friendly beach just across the road and fabulous sunsets every night we've had time to rest and recover our lost mojo. I think the Labs want to live here.
We decided to plug Loretta's leaks ourselves (the Labs held the ladder) as we're unable to have it professionally done for another two months. It's amazing what you can achieve with a trip to Bunnings and a YouTube video. We found a guy to fix the diesel heater; sorted out our refrigeration dramas; and got to know the local post office guy while collecting the various online deliveries that eventually resolved our IT problems.
When we weren't repairing or renovating we spent a lot of time strolling on the beach and we explored just a few of Adelaide's many fun things to do. These included going to Hahndorf for a kransky, and taking a drive up to the Barossa to stock up on a few of Maggie Beer 's gourmet treats.
It was also really lovely to catch up with a school friend we haven't seen in ages, and the Labs made two new friends, Ushie and Sita, who joined us on one of many frolics along the beach.
So now we're ready to head off tomorrow, feeling glad we spent more time than expected in Adelaide, and looking forward to re-visiting. Here's a selection of our favourite photos from the past ten days. There's an over-abundance of sunset photos because there were so many good ones.
